What is a cannabis social club?

A cannabis social club (in Spanish, asociación cannábica or club cannábico) is a non-profit private association. Members pool resources to cultivate a shared, closed supply of cannabis for their own personal use. Nothing is sold to the public, nothing is consumed on the street, and nobody can walk in off the pavement.

That structure is the whole point. Spanish law treats what happens in a private space between consenting adult members very differently from what happens in public. A club is a private space.

Are cannabis clubs legal in Granada?

The honest answer is that they operate in a tolerated grey area, and it is worth understanding exactly where the lines are.

Private consumption is decriminalised. Using cannabis in a private setting is not a criminal offence in Spain.
Public consumption is not. Smoking in the street, in a park or on a terrace can bring an administrative fine under the Ley Orgánica 4/2015, starting at €601. Police in Granada do enforce this.
Selling is illegal. Clubs do not sell. Members contribute to the association and share a supply that the association cultivates on their behalf.
Clubs cannot advertise or recruit publicly. This is why every legitimate club works by invitation or referral, never by street promoters.

What a cannabis club in Granada is actually like

Forget the Amsterdam coffeeshop image. A Granada club is closer to a private lounge or a members’ bar. Expect sofas, low lighting, music, a bar serving soft drinks and snacks, and usually a games area — consoles, table football, board games. Most clubs are quiet on weekday afternoons and busy after 9pm.

You will find a mixed crowd: local members, students from the University of Granada, and travellers passing through. English is widely spoken in the tourist-facing clubs, Spanish everywhere.

Where the clubs are

Granada’s clubs cluster around a few areas:

Centro — the most convenient for visitors, walking distance from Plaza Nueva and the cathedral.
Realejo — the old Jewish quarter, a short walk uphill from the centre.
Albaicín — fewer clubs, but the most atmospheric part of the city.
Zaidín and Camino de Ronda — more local, more student-heavy, further from the tourist core.

Because clubs are private, most do not publish a street address online. You receive the exact location together with your invitation.

Who can join

To become a member of a cannabis club in Granada you need to:

Be at least 18 years old (some clubs set their own limit at 21) and show valid photo ID or a passport;
Be invited or referred — this is a legal requirement, not a formality;
Complete a membership form and pay the association’s membership fee;
Agree to the club’s rules: consumption only on the premises, nothing taken outside, no resale, no photos of other members.

Membership fees vary from club to club and are set by each association. You will be told the exact amount before you sign anything.

How to join, step by step

Request an invitation online. Fill in the form with your travel dates, nationality, age and full name.
Receive your invitation. We send it by email or WhatsApp, along with the address and opening hours.
Come to the club with your ID. Registration is completed in person — this is required by law and cannot be done remotely.

Rules worth knowing before you arrive

Never consume outside the club, and never carry cannabis through the street.
Do not photograph or film other members — privacy is taken seriously.
Do not bring non-members. Everyone who enters has to be registered.
Do not ask to buy for someone else. Sharing outside the association is what gets clubs closed.
